On the approximability of some degree-constrained subgraph problems

چکیده
In this article we provide hardness results and approximation algorithms for the following three natural degree-constrained subgraph problems, which take as input an undirected graph G = (V, E). Let d ≥ 2 be a fixed integer. The Maximum d-degree-bounded Connected Subgraph (MDBCSd) problem takes as additional input a weight function ω : E → R, and asks for a subset E′ ⊆ E such that the subgraph induced by E′ is connected, has maximum degree at most d, and ∑ e∈E′ ω(e) is maximized. The Minimum Subgraph ofMinimum Degree ≥ d (MSMDd) problem involves finding a smallest subgraph of G with minimum degree at least d. Finally, the DualDegree-dense k-Subgraph (DDDkS) problem consists in finding a subgraph H of G such that |V(H)| ≤ k and the minimum degree in H is maximized.

On some network design problems with degree constraints
We study several network design problems with degree constraints. For the minimum-cost Degree-Constrained 2-Node-Connected Subgraph problem, we obtain the first non-trivial bicriteria approximation algorithm, with factor 6 violation for the degrees and a 4-approximation for the cost. This improves upon the logarithmic degree violation and no cost guarantee obtained by Feder, Motwani, and Zhu (2...

We study several network design problems with degree constraints. For the degree-constrained 2 vertex-connected subgraph problem we obtain a factor 6 violation for the degrees with 4 approximation for the cost. This improves upon the logarithmic degree violation and no cost guarantee obtained by Feder, Motwani, and Zhu (2006). Then we consider the problem of finding an arborescence with at leas...
متن کاملDegree-Constrained Subgraph Problems: Hardness and Approximation Results
A general instance of a Degree-Constrained Subgraph problem consists of an edge-weighted or vertex-weighted graph G and the objective is to find an optimal weighted subgraph, subject to certain degree constraints on the vertices of the subgraph. This paper considers two natural Degree-Constrained Subgraph problems and studies their behavior in terms of approximation algorithms. These problems t...
متن کاملOn the Approximability of the Maximum Common Subgraph Problem
Some versions of the maximum common subgraph problem are studied and approximation algorithms are given. The maximum bounded common induced subgraph problem is shown to be Max SNP-hard and the maximum unbounded common induced subgraph problem is shown to be as hard to approximate as the maximum independent set problem. The maximum common induced connected subgraph problem is still harder to app...
متن کاملDegree-Constrained Subgraph Reconfiguration is in P
The degree-constrained subgraph problem asks for a subgraph of a given graph such that the degree of each vertex is within some specified bounds. We study the following reconfiguration variant of this problem: Given two solutions to a degree-constrained subgraph instance, can we transform one solution into the other by adding and removing individual edges, such that each intermediate subgraph s...
